Type of a scam Employment
Arnies Furnace (Sunnyvale, CA) sent me an email to set up a Google Hangouts interview for a Graphic Designer position that I applied to through Indeed.com. That week I had applied to several such positions on Indeed.com. Though I did not recognize the company name, I figured it could be through one of the many recruiters that represented these positions. It was a remote position and they would set up all the hardware/software I needed. I entertained it because I have been job searching for months.
The email came from "[email protected]" and the Google email for the interview was "[email protected]." I found this odd that neither email came from arniesfurnace.com. Even odder, was that the interviewer's name was "Bell Benson," yet the email address ("[email protected].") did not seem too reflect that name.
Upon researching the company, I found ton's of positive customer reviews. I guess they put a lot of time into this scam. The website also looked very professional (arniesfurnace.com). Under "Contact Us" was a section that said "Call Us," but there was no phone number. After looking around, I found the number on their mobile site,"669-244-6382." I searched the web for employee reviews and scam reports and did not find any, so I scheduled the interview.
I was surprised that the interview was text only and not video. I went into it very wary that it might be a scam. Then I called the number on their website, a man answered, "Hello?" Odd that he did not use a company name. I asked if it was Arnie's Furnace and explained that I had an interview with his company. This gruff voice assured me that it was their Recruiter. I went through a 2-hour text interview where I answered the questions professionally in case it was on-the-level, but was careful not to disclose personal info. The questions seemed logical for the position, but I noticed sloppy grammar which to me is another red flag. I was also confused by their question, "What does privacy and code of ethics mean to me?"
In a short while, it became apparent that these questions seemed to be auto-responded because of the frequency and failure to reflect my answers. After 2 hours, I was extremely uncomfortable. They sent, "Congratulations! You're hired for $50/hour" after training for which I would receive $10/hour.
At this point, I was certain it was a scam and before they could go any further because I was sure the next step would be financial, I stated, "When can I speak with someone? I am uncomfortable providing anymore information without a live interview."
The strange response that came to me was, "Good for you."
I waited another 20 minutes and nothing came back, so I saved the entire interview transcript and signed off.
