I received an email with the subject "interview notice" from "Candance Stewart" ([email protected]) who claimed to be an HR Manager looking for a work-from-home administrative assistant candidate for Arqiva, a UK-based telecommunication company. I was not suspicious about this whole thing at all since I applied for countless jobs in the past month on various recruiting sites. Candance referred me to another hiring manager, Tori Wilson ([email protected]), who would discuss the position with me via Google Hangouts as she sent me an email about the job description and let me decide if I wanted to continue with the interview process. When I asked Tori Wilson about how the interview will be conducted, she said that it will be conducted via Google Hangouts as well. She asked me a series of questions regarding my experience, background, work ethic, business conduct, philosophy towards work, and then here come a few final questions about how I'd like to be paid, the name of the bank that I'm using, not the account number, and finally my contact information, mainly my full name, phone number, home address, and email. Then she told me to wait for her supervisor to review my answers. She got back to me shortly after and told me that I got hired as she sent me the employment offer letter for me to sign. The contract mentioned that I will be paid $20 per hour. I was excited that I finally got the offer, yet I thought the offer letter looks sort of unprofessional somehow. However, I chose to ignore my gut feeling and continue to sign my contract anyway as an independent contractor. The lady told me that I will receive a check with instructions by mail on how to purchase training materials and other office supplies and that I was required to check-in with her at 9 am sharp in the following morning on a Saturday. The next morning came and the envelope containing a $3,999 check arrived at 8 am by FedEx. The envelope was sent under the name of David Jackson from DSV AIR & SEA INC in Humble, Texas. Around 9 am, I checked in with Tori Wilson and she instructed me to deposit the check following the instructions on the paper attached in the envelope. I deposited the check, but at the same time, my suspicion continued to grow even more as I reread the instructions on a small suspicious-looking piece of paper asking me to text a payroll officer named David Jackson (the sender) prior to the deposit and later send a picture of a deposit slip and receipt to this email: [email protected]. The check itself also came from a completely different company in New Jersey (unrelated to Arqiva) with the heading, Safeland Title Agency LLC, Escrow Account. I called my bank and I looked up the names of these people everywhere online, but none of their names came up on the search that linked up with Arqiva. I also googled the names of these companies on the envelope too, but I couldn't find any connection between the companies and the people mentioned previously. Later I tried to call the Arqiva regional office in Los Angeles that was listed on the company website (+31(0) - 577-66-33), but the number didn't work with my phone showing a number from the Netherlands instead of LA. The phone number itself also appeared to be a fraudulent number that was intentionally posted for it to look like the LA area code (310). Finally, I decided to call the Arqiva headquarter in the UK to verify the job listing and it turned out that they no longer have an office in Los Angeles and they couldn't verify the work-from-home admin position listing as well.
