Aspen Dental Reports & Reviews (2)

Aspen Dental Oneonta took a full set of X-rays for me. They told me I have a cavity, but don’t have any openings to get it filled for six to eight months. I went to a different dentist in the meantime, had another full set of X-rays taken and no cavity was found. When I returned to Aspen Dental in Oneonta and told them the new X-rays showed no cavities, they admitted the first set of X-rays could have been a shadow.

One of my coworkers had the same experience. Aspen Dental Oneonta took her X-rays and told her she had NINE cavities, set up a payment plan for her and scheduled appointments to fill them. After consulting with a different dentist and getting new X-rays taken, she was told she had zero cavities.

Aspen Dental is a scam to make money off of people who cannot afford other dental treatments. I recently got new dental insurance and had to switch to Aspen Dental. Prior to my appointment, I had consistent dental check ups every six months with no issues. I am 35 and haven't had a cavity in years. I've never needed braces and have been told my teeth are in great shape.

At Aspen, after an excessive amount of x-rays (more than I've ever received at any other office) and a short consult, I was told I needed Invisalign and was at risk of breaking my teeth if I didn't get them straightened because they were undergoing too much pressure. The dentist said I had several "abfractions," which is a controversial theory in the field of dentistry and not supported by reputable dentists. I was also told I had gum disease and needed to start deep cleanings every 3-4 months. They measured my gums, a process that was very painful. They said I was showing serious bone loss and should be concerned. All of this was frightening. They said they could start the deep cleaning today on one side of my mouth (due to the insurance), but the process only took ~15 minutes. That is NOT a deep cleaning, even for one side of the mouth.

They wanted me to pay in full for all recommended treatments, but luckily I declined and said I needed to think about it. I was given the bill for my visit. I paid, assuming it covered the services. After I paid, I was given an itemized receipt that showed I was charged $135 for an electric toothbrush. They did not tell me the cost of this toothbrush up front. Once I got home, I started searching online and found several accounts of people receiving the exact same diagnosis, which sent up some red flags. There are several horror stories of people having similar or worse experiences.

I went to a real reputable dentist today and my teeth are in great condition. My gums were measured and the values were 2-4 mm lower than what Aspen told me. I don't have gum disease and I don't need braces. They tried to pressure me into treatments that I did not need. They are in it only for the money and do not have the patient's best interests at heart.
