We have a circular driveway that is in need of repair so I called the number on flyer 901-230-1903 and made an appointment. I was out walking when the company arrived so they started talking to my husband. The man appeared nice, was clean cut, and looked me right in the eye, so he seemed honest and trustworthy. The receipt says his name is Thomas Nelson.
He said he had enough material left in his truck from a job he'd just finished, and if we'd let him do our driveway, that would help him to finish out his day. He offered to give us a better price since he had the material left over. He quoted a price and my husband underbid that. He accepted my husband's counter offer. We did something we've never done before, which was taking the offer without getting referrals.
As he started spraying the driveway, I noticed that the color didn't match and looked striped. I told him didn't like the difference in colors, but he said it would even out as it dried. After he finished spraying the driveway, he told us a sob story about his grandfather dying. He said he had a lot of debt and he and his father were trying to build the business back up. Because of that they were working out of their home; they had no established place of business. He said he couldn't cash a check because his wife didn't like him to give out his home address. She didn't want people coming to their home. He asked for payment in cash and said he needed the money to make his house payment. I went and got cash and gave it to him.
He said he'd be back in next day or two to fix anything that didn't look right. He never came back and now he won't answer calls from my cell number. I called him from my house phone and left a message. He called me back and said he had a headache and couldn't come today but would come tomorrow. We have not heard anything from him since.
I called police to report the scam and am reporting it here on BBB's Scam Tracker to let others know to beware of this scam.
