This is the telephone message that started the scam for my 83 year old mother:
"Hello Good day this is not a spam call this is a follow up call from the Atlantic sweepstakes company in association with the Publisher's Clearinghouse calling you today to give you a big congratulations about being our grand prize winner of $8500000.00 along with a brand new 2020 Mercedes-Benz and being that you are v.i.p. winner you will receive a bonus award of $7000.00 weekly for a lifetime Congratulations to claim your prize please press one."
This particular scam requested taxes and fees be paid upfront of $85,000.00 (1% of 8.5 Million). In addition to this amount, my mother has advanced more than $200,000.00 to redeem her winnings on prior scams. This began in April of 2019 and she has not received any promised winnings.
