Att Directv Has Been Hacked - Software Upgrade Scam
I was logged into my account online during the call. I gave him the wrong pin on purpose. He said it was incorrect. Then I gave the correct pin. He said it was still wrong. I updated my online pin just in case and he said it was now correct.
Next he was explaining the boxes we had were fine and no tech would need to be dispatched but we needed a software update. He said the cost was $299.00 but there was no charge to me as AT&T was covering this. I knew at this point this was all BS. AT&T owns the equipment and they do not charge for updates. I continued to listen as he said that he would put me to the tech to log in and do the updates. He said the tech charge was $199.00 and even though I would need to pay this they would give me a $25.00 discount per month for 24 months which would more than make up for it. He said I could mail in a check for the service and mentioned the address was on the DTV upgrades site. I told him to FO and hung up at this point. The big issue here is how did they know my information? I don’t get a bill and I am on autopay so there is nothing in the mail or email to steal. The information that had was accurate about my account which is why I was hooked for a bit. I changed pin and password after the call.
Phone number that scammer called from was 8028843377.
