The scammer approached us, claiming to have seen holes in the shingles and rotting wood on our roof while working on a neighbor's roof. He made it sound very urgent. Since we'd seen workers (but didn't remember their faces) on a neighbor's roof, his story was plausible, and we didn't start checking on him until later. He had two day-workmen spend several hours supposedly cutting up rotten plywood and beams from a portion of the roof, making a lot of noise. When a lot of things didn't add up, and he asked for $20,000 in cash (no check) to pay for supplies, we realized this was a total scam, and it ended. When we got legitimate roofers out for estimates, they said that none of what the workmen did was necessary, and it all was destructive and would have to be repaired at an estimated cost of $2500.
