Luxand, Inc. has a website called babyfacegenerator.com. The service it provides is to generate the image of a child from the shoulders up by combining the photos of two other individuals that the user uploads. It is supposed to show you what your future baby would look like. The service is incredibly low quality. It generates one child's face and then pastes that same face onto the head of various children's photos - it says it is generating a new child each time, but the face is always the same. While the service is poorly executed, the business model is straight-up predatory. The company provides a 3-day free trial after which you are charged $19.99 on a WEEKLY basis to have a membership to use this service. While the company seems to have their legal ducks in a row (it does warn you that you will be charged), its business model relies on people forgetting they have signed up for this free trial and then being charged around $80 a month to have a membership to a ****** service which they will never use again. This is what happened to me - I forgot about the subscription and was charged $120 before I realized my mistake. I think I wouldn't have complained if they charged $2 a week, because I know this is a result of my failure to unsubscribe. But the fact that they charge $19.99 a week is outrageous especially given that this is a service that a) is horrible quality and b) only useful for one-off amusement.
Unfortunately, I am not sure if what they are doing is illegal. They have Terms and Conditions and a Privacy Policy on their website. They make an unsubscribe option available and send update emails to let you know you will be charged (unfortunately these went to an email I never use). They also mention the terms of the service before you sign up.
I hope this company can be investigated and that something can be done to protect future and vulnerable consumers from falling victim to Luxand, Inc's predatory scheme.
