Stuttering middle-aged, slim man approaches your car in a Calgary mall parking lot, near a C-train Station. He asks if you are familiar with the area. He goes on a long, stuttering spiel, almost crying, saying he put his backpack (containing his wallet, $2,000 computer, and his change of clothing) on the ground to buy a train ticket and when he turned around, it was gone. He (apparently) filed police reports and no one can help him. He begs for $54 to buy a ticket on Red Arrow bus back to Lethbridge where his mother is waiting for him and he needs money urgently to catch the next bus. He says he’s employed and can afford to pay me back when he gets to Lethbridge. I said I don’t carry cash, sorry. He points to a bank with ATM nearby. Trusting that he really was in dire need, he walked to the ATM with me and waited outside the bank. I gave him $60 and another $20 in case he needed food. My adult children admonished me, saying he could have held a knife to my back and told me to empty my account out. I felt that I had to help someone in need, and although I gave him my husband’s cell number to arrange to e-transfer the money back to us, he did not call. He gave me a fake number for his cell. This happened at Chinook mall outside Staples (hence the fake name he gave me...”Dell”....as in computers) about a month ago. Well, my SCAM suspicion was confirmed when he approached me yesterday at North Hill mall in front of Winner’s, as I was exiting my car. I could NOT believe that he used the same, “Excuse me, but are you familiar with this area?” line!! I said “not at all” and jumped back into my car and locked the door. I wish I had taken his picture....I recognized this same man right away! And I think he recognized me, because he ran off. During this Christmas season and people are feeling sympathetic and generous, I feel it is important to get this alert out to Calgarians to know not to give this man a cent!!
