I was looking to buy a small inexpensive freeze drier. I typed it into google and an ad for Best Buy came up and showed exactly what I was looking for. It looked like a tabletop size. Everything looked legit until I got the order summary and the email address looked sketchy so I immediately tried to go back in to the order. Everything at that point was non-existent. The customer service number, the website was fake, I tried the phone number and it was fake. There was not even a way to cancel my order within 15 minutes of my purchase.

The scammer sent me an email representing the Best Buy Geek Squad. See below. I called the number and told them to cancel the charges referred to in the email and they said that they had to access my network through my computer to remove the software they claim they are charging me for. I said that I would not let them download anything and that I could just dispute the charges on my credit card and block them and that would take care of it. They should just be able to credit me if they are able to charge me. They do not need to access anything on my computer for that. He insisted the they only way for me to no longer be charged or get a credit for what has already been charged was to access my internet. He kept saying that he was just doing his job and asking me "do I want the charges to stop or not? I said of course but this is not how it does not make sense that this is how it need to be done. I googled the software and read to him how it is being used for scamming people to get access to their computer data and bank accounts. He says that he was not doing that but if you look at the email, you can see all the clues. The email came from a gmail account, not a business, the address is 123 Main street with no city and in the past when I have gotten this email (I have gotten a few from the "Geek Squad") I call and it does not connect to anything. This time I actually got a person. I believe this is a scam. He told me that calling my credit card company would not do any good. He could not tell me how it was getting billed so that is another sign. He asked for the receipt number from the email, I gave it to him. If you have a receipt number and you can see a charge, you can see where it was charged to. So he should be able to just credit me but he insisted that he could not. I can see how people less computer savvy than I am falling for this. Please warn others! Thank you! This was the email I was sent.........

Early in the morning, I got an email from BestBuy saying that a subscription would continue and I would get charged $369.99 unless I called a number to cancel it.

I called the number. They instructed me to go onto my computer. They told me to open a second email. They needed to download software. My computer went into a mode where they could control my computer remotely. I had a feeling that something was off so I shutdown my computer

I found out that it was a scam. They were downloading software to hack my computer and get sensitive information.

I changed my email, banking, and stock trading passwords on my phone - not my computer since it had been compromised. I also deleted the software that the fraudsters downloaded.

I don’t know how relevant this is, but the guy on the phone had an Indian accent. The 203 area code implies that he was in Connecticut, but he may not be there. I am not sure about the zipcode, but I chose one in Connecticut just to fill out this form

The ad was on a Facebook page , shown as a sponsored ad. 24 hr Flash Sale from Best Buy . Advertising as an overstock sell off on power tools , generators etc. I purchased two generators. They offered free shipping with two or more products. I used my CC to pay, my confirmation was sent to my email account for my purchase. One confirmation was from pay pal saying my CC was used to pay Elizebeth May 99$ . I thought that was strange since I don’t have a pay pal account. I called pay pal and questioned them about this. They didn’t share any important information with me.

A few days later I received an email with a tracking number , a usps tracking number, I thought this was odd too since their ad said items shipped with DSL. So I followed the tracking number and it eventually went to a Military base. I called usps and they tracked it down to the base , she asked me what was I expecting? Generators I said. Well they must have given you the wrong tracking number because this was for a pillow. She said to contact the shipper and request the correct tracking number that this happens a lot.

I sent emails to the 2 Best Buy provided , I received No reply . They must have been good emails since nothing bounced back.

I noticed today when I went back into my saved emails and try and load their emails , for some reason my computer said it can’t find them. That’s ok though I took screen shots of everything.

I went back on Facebook and found other ads from Best Buy selling the same exact Flash sale items. I opened looking for other contact information and just find email links.

Ordered a Dell Inspiron 17in 2 in 1 laptop for 87.00 total price ending at 113.85. This was ordered on July 1, 2021. On July 26, 2021, ordered a HP elitebook 850 15. 2 inch laptop for 90.00 total price ending at 99.00. Started trying to contact the company by sending emails since no other way to get ahold of them. Sent several emails first being on July 29. The company never responded. Filed a claim with Paypal for the first computer on August 5, 2021. Stating that I had not received anything. On August 9, 2021 got an email from Paypal saying the company had provided a tracking number showing that the item had been delivered, therefore the claim was denied and the case closed. The tracking number provided was a post office tracking number that was not insured so therefore no claim could be turned in to the post office. The tracking number showed the generic message left in or at the mailbox. My address is a UPS store box and the tracking normally shows handed directly to a staff member or left at front desk. I still have not received either of the computers and have not been allowed to get my money back. Therefore I believe this to be a definite scam.
