"Dear Applicant, Your resume was reviewed at BettrAi Inc. (https://bettrai.com/) and we are inviting you to interview for a DATA ENTRY OPERATOR (Remote) position offering $30/hour. To proceed with the job briefing and interview, please contact Mrs. Nicole Hathaway via Microsoft Teams following the link below."
After contacting Nicole Hathaway on MS Teams, I was instructed to follow a link to answer a few interview questions and that I would receive an email/ text providing information on the next steps. Please note that one of the interview questions was about direct deposits for paychecks and which bank I used.
The following day, on October 31, 2023, I received another email from Venkat Rajaneni:
"Dear Candidate. Thank you for taking the time to interview with us at BettrAi Inc. I am delighted to inform you that you have been offered the DATA ENTRY (Remote) position. To proceed on getting started and further details on the position, please contact your supervisor, Mrs. Nicole Hathaway via Microsoft Teams."
After contacting Nicole Hathaway on MS Teams again, I was told the following:
"... The company would be making provision of funds to be made available for you via check/direct deposit to make purchase of the home office materials needed... An Offer letter will be prepared and We will email it to you before the start of your briefing tomorrow. You are advised that you read carefully and sign at the required areas on the letter and email it back to me so that we can open your file with the company."
Furthermore, Nicole stated:
"To perform your duties effectively, you will be working with some Accounting/ Data entry software to keep record, a WhiteSmoke software, Employee Training Software. You would need a Five9 cloud contact software which provides real-time and historical reporting, call recording, workforce management, quality monitoring, screen pops and Microsoft Office 365. Apple MacBook pro, Wireless e-Printer, Scanner, Fast internet and a small office chair and table and other office stationaries. Also a time tracker to calculate your hours devoted since this is an online work from home. You will receive a paycheck for the purchase of the working materials, the check will be issued by one of our clients and the company will have it sent to you."
I found the last sentence of her statement to be suspicious. When I questioned Nicole about this, she replied:
"The reasons why we send you the funds are to ensure a good working relationship between employer and employee, to observe your dedication and how well you follow instructions and most importantly because a receipt of payment will be needed upon arrival of the items to enable you claim them. Once you receive the check you are to have it deposited into your account. The funds will be Credited and available the following day for you to withdraw and make purchase of the working items. Once the funds is available, you will be referred to a trusted vendor for purchase of the items which will be delivered to your doorstep by the vendor/shipper."
At this point in the conversation I was pretty sure I was being scammed, so I began researching the company and the names of the people involved. Although I didn't find any direct evidence confirming illegitimacy, I thought the overall lack of information regarding the company and people involved to be suspicious as well. Then after researching the ScamPulse.com website, I found another post recounting another interaction with BettrAi and Venkat Rajaneni that was nearly identical to my own. After confronting Nicole with this information, she did not reply again. Although the level of sophistication of this job scam was quite intricate, there were definitely red flags that were very concerning. Had this scam continued further, they would have had my name, address, phone number, bank name, and signature - more than enough to do significant financial damage. Thankfully the ScamPulse.com post convinced me that I was being scammed and I hope my post will help do the same.
