The next morning, I received shipping confirmation and tracking and I was able to retrieve the tracking information as well. I was then told the shipping agency would contact me with more details. I received an email from the shipping agency informing me they are preparing the puppy for shipping and has passed all health checks. Shortly after, I recieved another email indicating g that the crate the sender sent was rejected and I needed to pay $2000 more for a thermal crate due to bad weather. At this point, I felt very uncomfortable and before I could reach out to the sender, I received a call from someone claiming they were from the shipping agency. They asked if I received the email requesting for payment of the thermal crate. I told them I did not feel comfortable proceeding and that I would call the sender first. I tried to call the sender's number that we had been texting on but it gave me a busy signal. Shortly after I recieved a text from the sender informing me they just spoke to the shipping agency and reassured me this was normal due to unexpected bad weather. I asked the sender why this was never told to me and that I was not aware there could be more charges. I did not feel comfortable proceeding and asked for a refund. I was met with resistance indicating the money had already been spent on the shipping cost, crate, etc and the refund was not possible. I continued to push back and the sender became more aggressive and insisting. It was at this point I realized I had been scammed. After several more attempts to request a refund, the send stopped responding to me. I received 2 more call attempts from the supposed shipping agency, which I did not answer, and a follow up email with the payment instructions to send Zelle payment for the $2000 crate, which I also did not respond or send.
I reported this to my bank but unfortunately since this was sent through Zelle, there was nothing they could do to recover the money. I was encouraged by my bank to file a police report, which I did and also completed a report to the pet scam website and federal trade commission.
The name of the person used in the scam was Veronica Whatley, 380-999-9232, 7115 Park Ave, Cleveland OH, [email protected] and the email on the Zelle account was [email protected].
