Total money lost $500
Type of a scam Home Improvement
On the morning of October 6th, Robert arrived at my home early in the morning and trucks began to unload material to start work. I asked him to stop working and told him I needed an estimate of the cost to complete the driveway. "It will be same as yesterday" he said. "I need a written estimate or total amount", I stated, "I'm not sure how much this is all going to cost". Robert then stopped the crew working and said "Let's just settle up on yesterday and I can give you an estimate on the rest another day." He then pulled out a wheeled measuring tool; walked around the section they had already paved and said "Let's round it down to one thousand square feet; or $5,400". I was astounded! I told him that was not at all what we had agreed to the day before and that they had stated the had $500 - $900 on the truck. "He probably meant yards" he said. This is the moment i realized I was being scammed. When I told him I couldn't pay that amount he began reducing the total; first to $4,000, then $2,000, and then to $1,500. I said I needed a written receipt for the value of the work he completed and I would need to consider my options; including asking the ScamPulse.com how I should proceed. He became angered at this notion and two of the other men on the crew positioned themselves behind me, next to his vehicle, blocking me from entering my home. Robert stated he needed payment immediately or would be filing a lawsuit and a lien against my home. I was intimidated and scared on my own property. I told him I was feeling uncomfortable but nothing changed about the energy, stance, or tone. He asked me for a credit card and said he "didn't want this situation to turn ugly". By the grace of God, my neighbor approached from his yard to see what was going on and two of the men left to address him allowing me a chance to get back into my home. With my neighbor present and me inside my home, their demeanor changed. Robert immediately left in his vehicle. Tony stayed behind and I returned outside to speak with him. Tony stated they wanted to get this resolved and "put it behind us". I ultimately paid them for the work they had completed and they left my property without further harassment.
Afterwards, I reviewed the business card they had given me the day before. I searched for information for Black To Pros and the name they asked me to make the check out to, "Robert Stevens". After looking for business information and reviews on Google (I really wish I would have done this earlier) I found Mr. Stevens and his company which continues to change names has been sued by state attorney generals in Arkansas and Florida for this exact scam. The TN attorney general also recently released a notice of scam for he and his company.
I am very embarrassed that I fell for this scam and realize it could have been so much worse. I know based on experience from others who have been scammed the asphalt used on the section of my driveway is subpar and will deteriorate within a few months. I hope that others can be alerted to this company so the Steven's are not able to prey on others.
