I received a call from Evelyn at Capital Mediations Firm who said that I was being offered a settlement on an outstanding cash advance that was never repaid. With interest and fees, my balance was supposedly $812.94 but she could offer me a settlement today (and today only) if I paid $530.00. While she insisted that her "firm" is not a collection agency (rather a mediation agency), I could find no website or other information online about Capital Mediations Firm. When I asked her to email or mail me verification of this supposed outstanding debt and of her company, she balked. Only after making my payment would I receive my verification letter and confirmation of case closure. These terms were unacceptable to me. She said that if I have these types of concerns about the legitimacy of her firm, she would rather just have me deal with her client directly (although she would never tell me who her client was).

What's scary is that she had the last 4 digits of my SSN, an old address, and knowledge that I had a non-payment experience with a cash advance company; what she didn't know is that this experience was resolved in a bankruptcy and so was no longer considered outstanding. Her failure to allow me to verify her claims, her client, and her company, coupled with the fact that I know I do not have such an outstanding debt on my credit report leads me to believe that this is a debt collection scam.
