I received a call from 800-369-6864 on my office phone number, which is not connected to my Capital One account. The number claimed to be a high-level fraud security alert center from Capital One. This was believable as my Capital One card was just recently compromised the week prior. They claimed that an IP address traced back to Chicago, IL had hacked the account, which is again believable as I had just returned home on Saturday from a trip to Chicago, IL. I couldn't understand the lady on the phone and then handed the phone over to my daughter to sort this issue out for me. The woman asked my daughter to verify the last 4 digits of my social security number to confirm that she had access to handle this situation for me and to input the numbers on the phone's keypad. The communication between my daughter and I was hectic as it was mid-work day and she works for my company. The lady then said she couldn't understand the numbers and asked if she could confirm it via the first 5 numbers instead, which I told my daughter yes and she typed them in. The caller then hung up and said the line was disconnected and called back again. She then said she sent a verification code to my cell phone and it would need to be confirmed. I never received the code. My daughter then got suspicious that the call was a scam and googled the phone number. When she googled it the first thing that came up on Google was the Capital One website's article page titled Commitment to Identity Security. This then made the call seem more legitimate in combination with the Capital One coming up on the caller ID. However, my daughter did not see that number that was calling anywhere on the Capital One website. While this was occurring, they said the social security number needed to be verified again and my daughter re-typed it in the keypad. Then the caller hung up and at this point, my daughter had fully recognized it was a scam. They then called back from 850-946-6770 saying they were calling from their private extension since the call kept getting disconnected. My daughter asked them to verify if they were Capital One and they said they were the fraud department, asked them what my cell phone number was and they didn't respond, she then up the call and we contacted Capital One immediately.
