• 3/25/2024: I responded that I was interested.
• 3/25/2024: [email protected] asked me to complete a set of screening questions.
• 3/27/2024: I sent my completed questionnaire.
• 3/27/2024: [email protected] informed me that they would like to extend a job offer. They requested and I supplied the following:
* Full Name:
* Full Home Address:
* Phone Number:
* Email:
• 3/28/2024: [email protected] (using the name Merit Hagenkort) sent an offer letter, which I signed and returned.
• 3/28/2024: Merit Hagenkort ([email protected]) sent me an email detailing onboarding with SGA Marketing. She said my supplies are on their way, and we're expediting the check for your workspace setup.Shea will text you shortly to guide you through onboarding.
• 3/29/2024: Shea Haymons (1+ (832) 421-3847) texted me saying text would be the platform for communication during onboarding. Shea said my info would be forwarded to the finance department to prepare and endorse a check for office equipment.
• 3/29/2024: [email protected] (using the name Nick Groner) emailed me with an e-check (City National Bank, check #1733) for $4,950 for office equipment attached. Shea and Nick told me to endorse, scan and deposit the check via mobile banking app, which I did. Shea began pressuring me to send proof of deposit to [email protected]. Then Shea would contact me with next steps. I began to grow suspicious and told Nick and Shea I would take no further action until the check had cleared and to contact me Monday, 4/1.
• 3/30/2024: The check cleared and was deposited in my bank account.
• 3/31/2024:Because of the odd nature of the text communication, not understanding the need to deposit the e-check and their high-pressure tactics, I began further investigation and discovered the prevalence of sending checks to purchase equipment. I also realized too late that while I had done research on SGA Marketing and found it to be a legitimate firm, their emails and domain names were career-sgamarketing.com, NOT sgamarketing.com.
• 04/01/24: I contacted my bank, alerted them of the scam before any next steps were taking. I asked them to reverse the deposit in my account and the case was turned over to the bank's fraud department.
