[email protected] Reports & Reviews (1)

- Houston, TX, USA • Jan 16, 2024

On January 9th someone pretended to be Blockworks (digital assets- crypto company), in search of a remote podcast editor. They provided me with a job briefing, description, and thorough company information, and wanted to interview me through Microsoft Teams. All communication was email first, Microsoft Teams second (and for interview), a phone call for interview review, and then back to Microsoft Teams- where it remained for the remainder of the time. During the interview, that Thursday (January 11th, 2024), they pretended to be multiple people (real employees of the real company). They pretended to be Mikaela Kirby, hiring coordinator (who is Blockworks' People & Talent Manager), Matt Fibiech, recruiting coordinator (really Research Analyst at Blockworks), and Daniel Marshman, Director of Events (really the Senior Director of Events at Blockworks) who was supposed to be my team leader. After an interview through Microsoft Teams, they called me for an interview review and then offered me the job. Thinking that I was accepting a new job, I filled out forms that stated they were for job enrollment, job offer acceptance, tax info, and direct deposit. This entire experience has compromised my social security number, a photocopy of my passport, my home address, phone number, and email. Following this situation, I was able to freeze my credit report (for all three bureaus) and close the bank account I used for what I thought was setting up direct deposit. This past Saturday, January 14th, 2024, they pretended to onboard me and prep me for training by having me purchase an iPad and an iPhone and requested a photo of both devices in boxes with serial numbers and receipts for reimbursement. After this, they told me we would wrap up the briefing with a video conference and begin training on Tuesday (Today, January 16th, 2024), as Monday was a holiday ( Dr. MLK Jr. Day). Today (Tuesday, January 16th, 2024) they asked me to send in the two devices (iPhone and iPad), via overnight FedEx for installations of the company's working software. I did NOT send them in (luckily). After some assistance from some family members, we were able to find on Reddit several other people who had been scammed the same way. I followed this by looking up and reaching out to the original name that I came into contact with, Mikaela Kirby (who is a real employee of the real company), and she did let me know that this scam has happened before (currently and previously) and that someone is using her identity and a fake Blockworks domain to scam people. Returning to my correspondence with the scammer, I let them know that after attempting to go out to fed ex, I could not make it due to bad weather, but I did have questions about the validity of the job offer (seeing as they wanted proof and purchase of all these things and hadn't provided proof of reimbursement being processed or anything. They told me I should receive it that same day (today), and when I asked about the planned video conference, they claimed it would be rescheduled until I sent the devices in. In conclusion of this report, I did not lose any merchandise, and no money was taken, but my private information including address, phone number, passport, and social security number has been compromised by scammers. I am reporting this hoping for preventative action of them illegally using my identity.
