Victim Location80516 Type of a scamGovernment Grant
I received a call via Messenger from an friend ( in Iowa)I knew in the past telling me she had "won" $200,000 from a government agency. Anyone that was retired, older, disabled, veteran etc. might qualify and would I like to apply. I told her no thank you, I didn't really need it. She was quite persistent about me applying but I declined. I thought it might be legit as her husband is a veteran and is disabled. This was in April 2019. Then first part of May 2019 I receive a call, again on Messenger, from a old friend in Tennessee that used the exact same format and wordage. He had "won" $500,000, saw my name on the list. That I should call and see if I had won also. He was sooo persistent, so I called and Surprise I'd won. I didn't really know what to believe or think as the message had a familiar face to go with the messages but sooo many red flags kept popping up. I played along not giving them anything they could hang me with. It was the $1000.00 upfront processing fee, case fee, and UPS deliverer fee "right now" that clinched it to be a scam. Yes I'm older and retired and couldn't help but see how easily a person can be tricked with a familiar face and friend doing the messaging. I told them and him I didn't want any money!

It stated out as a text message from, posing as a trusted friend of mine, as a text on messenger. I had recently lost my husband about 2 mos. ago so for her to contact me & ask how I am was not out of the ordinary. She started telling me about this CDFA and having a list regarding lost winnings for widows. In my right mind, I would not have been so accepting of this. However, I was bought into it, lock, stock and barrel. I did as "my friend" suggested I do. text them back and say I am ready for my winnings. My friend was telling me she did and received $30,000. Which is strange because my friend was not a widow. (yes, alert #1) I kept going. I did what they asked. Yes, they got my info. I feel so stupid. Then "things" started not jelling. The written English was really bad. Nothing my friend would have had. I stopped all communication with this "person" because it just didn't feel right. This person told me that this money would be sent to me via FedEx to my door. I just need to give them a delivery fee of $400. Then I remembered, my friend that this person used had been hacked months ago. My heart sank. I suddenly realized I had been scammed. However, they still haven't gotten any of my money "as yet". I did not give them my banking info. However, they do have my SSN# and drivers license. God I feel really dumb right now.
I do not want my name to be used. You can ask me any questions so you can warn others.

I was told by a friend yesterday to call this agency to be awarded money to get out of debt. After supplying them with my personal information they informed me in order to get the $20,000 'prize' I would have to give the UPS carrier the batch, reference, winning and serial numbers that they had given me during the phone call. I ended the call after telling them I didn't have the $1200-$1700 to give them and after they had asked for my next payday of $922 per month Social Security benefit. I am reporting this agency because (1) Any prize should not require money to be paid in order to get it, (2) The call was very lengthy and time-consuming and(3) It gives the person calling false hope and stress as they even consider receiving the much needed funds for their debts.
