CFBP Unclaimed Property and Assets [and] Bank of America Reports & Reviews (1)

I received a voice-mail message, made on 1 February 2023, on my cell phone from a man who identified himself as Nick Lewis, and claimed that he was with CFPB Unclaimed Property and Assets. He claimed that he was requested to reach me regarding a "Cancellation Process". He said that I could contact him at (804) 999-0699. I called him when I got home from work; he answered the call and claimed that he was leaving and asked me for a good time to get back with me. I told him early afternoon; he called me then the next day (2 February). He told me something like Bank of America (whom I formerly had a home loan and escrow account with) was trying to close out my account, and he mentioned something about a "Statute of Limitations" (a subtle sense of urgency?). He gave me this number to call: (888) 959-0923, along with an ID and account number which I was to enter in when requested; he also stated that I'd be helped by one Benjamin Cole. I called the number and the automated greeting indicated that I had reached Bank of America. I entered the numbers which I was given and I received an automated message stating that I had $975,000 in my account. (Yeah, right.) Suspecting a scam, I immediately hung up.

I went on-line and looked up Bank of America and obtained their phone number for the mortgage department. I explained the situation to a representative and he looked up my account. He indicated that I had leftover funds (around $800) which had been sent to me, and which I remember receiving. He stated that Bank of America never contacts customers by phone; I gave him the phone number which I called, 888-959-0923, and he did not recognize this number. He also said that I should report this to the appropriate authorities.

Soon after that, my cell phone rang; I answered it and the caller identified himself as Benjamin Cole. I believe that he indicated that I had this $975,000 in my account; I asked him something (I can't remember just what); then the line went dead. I don't know whether he hung up, or my cell phone had run out of minutes (which I found out a little later). Later on, Nick Lewis, at 804-999-0699, called and left me a message which I deleted.

I've had no further contact with either individual. This definitely appears to be a scam, and I want to report it before anybody does get taken. Had I followed thru with this I probably would have been requested to send some money (how many hundreds of dollars?) as a "filing fee" and to "cover [my] taxes"...
