Type of a scam Fake Check/Money Order
After some back and forth on his part regarding whether or not he could trust me in this transaction, he mailed out a check (in which he provided a [legit] USPS tracking number) and emailed instructions: deduct your money from the check and use the remaining to pay the shipper (whose name and address he included) via Walmart-to-Walmart Money Transfer, then contact him so he could contact the shipper.
I had assumed that, because he was geo-tagged in Aliso Viejo, that the check would be no more than $300 or $400 dollars; however, the check that arrived was for $1,200. I emailed him that evening to confirm that this was the correct amount. He confirmed that it was correct and once again stated to contact him when I had cashed the check. He then became annoyingly persistent in asking if I had cashed the check (at 3am and 6am).
Aside from the red flag with the amount, the Bank location was misspelled as "Walnut Greek" instead of "Walnut Creek". The signature on the check was also far too thick and signed under a different name (it also looks fake/home printed). I took the check to the bank (around 9am) and they confirmed that the check was fake. At this point, "Jack" proceeded to text and call me, but left no voicemails. I have reported and blocked him on WishLocal and on my email and cell phone carrier. I have also reported this incident and provided documentation to my local Sherrif's Department.
A few more notes regarding this scammer:
- The address on the envelope, check, and for the shipper are all in different states.
- His phone number has a Neveda area code.
- If you Google his phone number, one of the first results is from a Scam Forum reporting another incident with this person.
