The url reads https://chicos-store.com. The real Chico’s url is https://www.chicos.com
The fake site has the look and feel of the real site. It advertises a sale, “any 10 items for $59.00 with free shipping over $39.00." This is amazingly low pricing for Chico’s. I learned of the offer online. What made it plausible was that there had been rumors that Chico’s was going out of business. They have had a number of shakeups and restructurings recently. And it was Memorial Day weekend, a time of many sales.
When I went to check out, I went to a checkout page with a legitimate look and feel. I was asked to fill in personal data including name, address, phone number. Then I was directed to click on a submit link to enter payment data. Instead of presenting me with a form for credit card entry, I was taken to an error page. Soon afterward I received some autoresponder messages advising that payment was not completed and to return to the site or to a Chico’s store to complete the transaction. I received another autoresponder email asking with the subject line: “Did you face any problems?” The email came from the address Chico’s online ([email protected])
