When she called, they mentioned they’d send someone to assess our setup and provide options for $99, which would be credited toward the purchase if we moved forward. This seemed reasonable, so we scheduled a visit without doing our usual due diligence.
When the representative arrived, I could immediately tell something was off. He lacked basic product knowledge and couldn’t answer specific questions. At one point, he stepped out to call his manager and returned 15 minutes later with pictures of fireplaces that didn’t align with anything we’d asked for. He hurriedly asked for my email to send some numbers and seemed anxious to leave when we began asking for referrals and details about their company.
His truck had BC plates, and the phone number he called from was registered in Toronto. This wasn’t necessarily a red flag, but when I looked deeper into the company during his visit, several things didn’t add up. Their website displayed logos for Google Reviews, BBB, and Facebook, but they were just static images pasted onto the site. A search in the Registry of Joint Stocks, WCB, and ScamPulse.com yielded no results.
Further investigation revealed the website, chimneyfireplacehalifax.ca, shares similarities with several others across Canada and the US, including:
chimneyfireplaceolathe.com
chimneyfireplacejackson.com
barriefireplacechimney.ca
fireplacechimneyoakville.ca
All these sites had nearly identical layouts, wording, and start dates, suggesting this may be part of a larger, questionable operation. Because every major city across North America seemed to have a site for them. Thankfully, we hadn’t paid anything upfront. This experience was a strong reminder of the importance of thoroughly researching companies before proceeding with any work.
It’s possible that they’re a legitimate company that’s just starting out, and maybe I’m overthinking it. However, there were too many red flags that made me feel it was better to walk away from this situation.
