I applied for a data entry job through the app known as Handshake that had been recommended from my college (Western Governors University). After applying, a few days later the fake company reached out via text message sending me a job description and what was required of me in order to get the job. After agreeing to the terms, they then text me a link to a Microsoft Teams chat where I began chatting with a fake company hiring manager. The hiring manager began asking me typical interview questions and once I finished she said she would speak to me the following morning to let me know if I was a good fit for the position. The following morning they did just that, they messages me and said I had gotten the job. They then sent over what seemed to be a legitimate I-9 form and an agreement letter to the company. I filled it out, added my personal SSN and my ID. After sending my paperwork in via email she then began telling me that I would be sent a check for $200 as a sign on bonus and to screenshot it from the email, paste it to a doc, print it, cut the check out, and deposit the check in my online mobile banking app. Once the check had been emailed to me, it was made out for $3,200 and I began to take a step back and realized something was not right. I messaged the person and asked why the check was for $3,200 and not the $200 she mentioned prior. She took a bit to respond and then stated that the $3,00 was for equipment (which they previously told me the company’s vendor would supply/purchase and have shipped to me) and the $200 was for the sign on bonus. Never did she mention the $3,000 before hand. If the vendor was going to purchase the equipment and ship it to me, then why would I need to put the $3,000 in my personal bank account). After connecting the dots and becoming concerned I googled the real company's email and their email (and phone number) did not match the ones I had been in contact with. I then stopped communicating and began filling reports.

That just happened to me I thought it was legit because I looked up some of the peopel who were interviewing me for it on linkedin but they ghosted me and never game me a hiring date. I never got an email for the check but she did say that they would email me a check that I would print out & it would connect them to direct deposit. What report are you filling I might be able to help
