The next morning, on Saturday, June 26, 2021, I texted "Cindy" to see when and where I would meet her. She told me to meet her at 10:30 AM in front of the PetCo (9480 W Northern Avenue; Glendale AZ 85305). When I asked if she accepted VenMo, she said she preferred cash only, because she has had a bad experience before with VenMo and Zelle. I should have known that this was a big red flag.
?
Another red flag was that “Cindy” texted me to say that she would have her mom meet me instead because she was running late. She said her mom would be driving a white Acura MDX SUV. The “mom” was a middle aged Latina woman, who said her name was “Rosa.” “Rosa” showed me the adorable apricot and cream colored female Maltipoo. As cute as she was, I noticed that the puppy did not look like the pictures that was on the post. The puppy’s color was darker, and she had brown drainage coming from the corners of her eyes. Despite the difference of what was posted, I fell in love with the puppy in front of me who I named Phoebe.

On Sunday, June 27, 2021, Phoebe first showed signs of sickness. She still was not eating, and she began to vomit. The vomit was yellow because her stomach was empty. She became lethargic and napped for most of the day. During the night, she kept vomiting in her crate. Her vomit was now more of a dark brown/ reddish color. She still could not eat or drink. I knew something was not right, and that I needed to take her to the vet as soon as possible.
?
On the morning of Monday, June 28, 2021, I took Phoebe to the vet. Results from her physical exam showed that Phoebe was positive for Parvovirus. The vaccination paper that “Rosa” gave me was most likely illegitimate. It was a colored copy of a self-administered vaccination kit company, with handwritten dates. It takes about a week for Parvovirus to show symptoms in dogs, therefore it was evident that Phoebe was sold to me already sick. I tried contacting the “Cindy” to inform her of the situation. She did not respond. My calls went to her voicemail, which revealed a different name of “Jessica.” This was when I knew I had been cheated.
?
With no guarantee of Phoebe’s survival due to the severity from the virus, we knew that we could not go through with the costly treatment of hospitalization. My husband and I made the heartbreaking decision to put her out of her suffering through euthanasia.

Though this whole situation cost me almost $1200 (rehoming fee and vet bill combined), the emotional cost is much greater than the financial cost. I may never get my money back, but I want justice for Phoebe, and for all the many other dogs whose lives were cut short.
