When I returned the call to the number that showed up in my call log, I pressed the option (0) to speak to an operator. *** *** answered and discussed with me why I was being contacted. *** provided an old bank name I used to do business with and an account number, and she asked that I confirm the last four digits of my social security number, which she already knew.
I was told I had taken out a payday loan in 2012 that I failed to pay back, and her company, *** *** *** *** ***, was appointed to handle the legal actions taken against me to collect the money owed. I was also told that notification of this debt had been sent to me by the payday loan company prior to this action being taken. *** recited my mailing address, which I did not confirm.
I began to ask clarifying questions for which *** had very few detailed answers. I finally asked that she email any general correspondence from her agency regarding this matter to me at my work email address and that I would contact my current bank to discuss this matter with their fraud department. No email correspondence was sent by ***.
I called the number provided in the voicemail. The woman who answered stated she had already received up to 100 calls from people like me. She said her number must have been left by mistake by the "debt collector."
I have tried multiple times to make a return call to *** back at the number in my phone's call log, but I have not been able to get anyone (even an operator) to answer the phone.
