Someone called our home last week, claiming to be Dish Network, the caller ID confirmed that. They claimed that they needed to update our software on our receiver and make sure it was compatible still. They asked me to confirm our Dish account by giving our 4 digit pin. I said I didn't know it, and they said they would give me a hint, that it was probably the last 4 digits of a social security number, which I gave them. They then turned me over to another person, and he asked if we pay with an acct. ending in ***. I said no , we pay by check. He then pretended to download new software, told me to turn on T.V. and check the channels, to see if they were working properly, which I did. He said the new software would lower our bill by $10.00. He said if we had any problems, to call a specific number- 845-470-9744. He said that all he needed now was a $99.00 security deposit, which raised my suspicion. I told him I would have to call Dish because I didn't feel right about this. We hung up and I called Dish and they knew nothing of this, and our acct. pin was not a S.S. number. So I called the ScamPulse.com and they referred me to the Attorney General's office who then referred me to the credit reporting agencies. I had to place a fraud alert on our credit report. I called the number the scammers gave me and the person answered saying it was Dish. Another call from another number was made to the scammers and it was gibberish in a foreign language. A Google search found that the number was tied to a battery sales website with phone numbers in Pakistan. The scammers a few days later also called my mother, who I had warned.
