The job opportunity was for a Data Entry Clerk (Work From Home) position for Starkey Lab Inc. that I saw on a Facebook post. I responded to the ad and was contacted through email from a Debra McDowell ([email protected]) on July 19. I responded on July 20 that I was interested in the position. On July 21 I was told to contact Laura Mason who would be doing the interview that day. Her email is [email protected], and I was to reach out to her through Microsoft Teams. I then proceeded to have a chat interview through Teams, and was told I was offered the position. I had to submit pictures of the front and back of my driver license as well as a picture of me holding the license. I also had to complete an incredibly basic application. I was then told to report on the chat this morning, 7/24, again texting with Laura. She informed me that I would be sent an apple laptop and that they would send me an eCheck for $2300 that I would have to print out and cut out so that I can deposit it through my bank's mobile site. The funds were supposed to be used to pay for a bunch of software that was needed for the position minus $200 that I was to keep myself for a sign on bonus. When I questioned this, saying I wasn't comfortable and why wouldn't the laptop be sent with the software already installed, I was told that the laptop and software were to be in my name so I had to be the one to pay for the software, and that Laura would refer me to the vendor that I would purchase the software from. I then asked a couple of more questions about why I didn't see this specific job posting on the Starkey Lab career website link nor could I see Laura's or Debra's name on any employee list (yes, I had looked this up on 7/21). I also questioned whether this was a scam to gain access to my bank account. Laura said no, it wasn't, but that it was okay if I did not want to move forward with this. She also said that she needed to make a report and get my details off their database if I didn't want to continue, which I questioned because I know from working in Human Resources before that companies need to keep employee records on hand for a certain number of years. She said that once someone says scam that they let the person go and that she does not have the time to nurse anyone's feelings. I then told her that I would report this to the BBB.
