Type of a scam Employment
I drew up a freelance contract for them, which we both signed, agreeing that I would receive a deposit to begin the work and then they would pay me the rest after the job was completed. The contract contained my address and phone number. The next email was to inform me that a check would be sent out that same day. A few hours later, I received another email that there was an error in making the check and that an amount for me and an amount for a printer was added to the same check. No number amounts were mentioned. They asked that when I receive the check and deposit it, that I refund them the difference after I take my cut. This was another red flag.
Over a week passes, and I reach out to let them know that the check has not yet arrived. They instead tell me that my "silence" was concerning and they thought I rejected the project for them. I thought that was rude but remained professional. They asked again that when the check arrives that I deposit it and then write a return check with the refunded amount. A few more days pass and there is still no check. I email again to let them know that I have not yet begun work on the project because my deposit hasn't arrived. And I recommend that if the check hadn't been sent yet that they could just send the correct amount owed to me for the job. They ensure me that the check is on the way but must be delayed. A few more days pass and still nothing. I email again and this time a weekend passes and the check is sent on a Monday. It arrives on a Wednesday and they begin texting me that the check arrived and that I can deposit it. I told them that I would see it when I returned home. Opening the check, it just seems off. There are two different bank names and addresses on it and the location of some of the features on the check are in weird places. I immediately email them that I would like to cancel our contract and that I am willing to return the check to them. No fees from the contract since I never started on the work. They called me inconsiderate since so much time had already passed (one month) and we were "so close to finishing". When I wrote back that I was still cancelling the contract and asked for an address to send the check to, they told me they would send an additional $50 and that I should start working on the sketches for the logo. I declined again and asked again for an address since the one provided for the business was different from the one the check came from. Instead, they opted for me to rip up the check. So that's what I did. I never took it to the bank and they never emailed me back after that. I saved the emails, texts, and images of the check.
