Type of a scam Debt Collections
I called the phone number listed on the document 3109822000 and left a message.
A man named Mark Edwards returned my call pretending to be from the IRS "Tax Dispute Resolution Group". He told that I owed the IRS $9500 because of a unpaid auto loan debt I had over 11 years ago.
They encouraged me to call a "court appointed" mediator named Robert Stone to assist with settling my debt.
I called Robert Stone who told me that I had a $14,000 auto loan debt due to the company Cogent Financial Group. He said Cogent financial reported the debt to the IRS and now I owe both the IRS and Cogent Financial. I was told that my federal taxes were going to be taken, my wages would be garnished and any check associated with my social security number would be seized if I didn't settle this old debt immediately.
The gentlemen pretended to help me. He negotiated a deal where I were to sign a contract stating that I would pay $4200 to cogent financial group. He gave me a Wells Fargo Trust account number to deposit the money in. I was to sign a contract and deposit the money and my debt would be clear and free.
The email came from [email protected]. That felt suspicious considering Robert Stone insisted he was a court appointed mediator (not working for Cogent Financial). I told him of my suspicions and asked for some time to have a lawyer look it over. The gentlemen was very aggressive in insisting I sign the contract and provide the cash.
I forwarded the information to a friend who use to work for the IRS and they told me the whole thing was a scam and not to deposit any money into this random Wells Fargo Account.
I then called the REAL IRS number which is 18008291040 and checked to see if I in fact had a lien on my taxes. They told me there were no liens and no open issues.
I almost gave away $4200! Luckily I didn't go through with it but I sure was about to.
