I signed up for Freelancer and placed a few bids. Within a few hours that same day, I received a job offer through Freelancer. The "employer" asked some questions and then moved the interview process to Whatsapp. They sent me the company website, Cooper Tire. No sensitive information was asked from me. After completing all of the questions, it took about 20 minutes for the employer to get back to me that I had landed the job. This process was so expedient that I became suspicious. I stayed the course because I wanted to know if this was a scam or not. The employer even sent a W4 form via an outlook email address, which means they have my Social Security number, my full name, my email, and my home address. The employment application was incredibly bare, which raised concerns. However, I still decided to continue. Of course, I only decided to look into who I was talking to at this point and not earlier. Why would I be talking to a president of a company and not a hiring manager? According to the employer's name, I was talking to a PRESIDENT of a company! I wanted to know what kind of scam they were trying to perform so that I could accurately report it. They already have my SSN. The next day, the employer told me that I would be sent money from the company via email in order to pay for a home-setup office. So, that's the scam. They asked if I had a printer and a mobile banking app. I assume that I was supposed to print out the check and deposit it in my banking account. I have not yet received the email, or else I would have attached it in this form. I did not proceed any further. Instead, I am reporting the scam!
