County Sherriff's Office Reports & Reviews (2)

Got a call from 520-375-3370 from a man saying there was an arrest warrant out for me missing federal jury duty. He claimed I needed to bring him $5,000. , but once the paperwork was cleared, I'd get my money back. (I was asked to report for jury duty and I went online and asked to be excused because we were away at our other home. I went online and formally requested a postponement or excusal, and I was instructed to call them on October 15th and give them my assigned number. I did so and was told I was excused.) This was a pretty intense call; but when I said "If you're asking me for money, then this must be a scam." they hung up on me.

We were contacted by phone about 7:00 p.m. by a man identifying himself as being from the Sherriff's office in our county, displaying our county in the caller ID. He stated charges had been reduced against our son, effective immediately, and he was being released that evening. However, we would be held responsible for ten percent of a reduced bail amount until charges could be formally dropped, and he would be free thereafter. We were asked to pick him up that same evening. When we questioned him, he turned us over to a "Sargent Scott Smith" who could clarify any questions we had. After offering us many means of payment (cash, check, credit or debit card, or voucher), he asked us to buy a "secure spend" voucher from a local store, and bring it with us, or give it to him over the phone at 520-375-3370. He said he would be waiting for us at the jail door to release our son, but that we had to pick him up "tonight". We said we would talk to him in person at the detention center before buying a voucher. On further deep questioning of this man, and accusing him of being a scammer, or having called the wrong person, since it didn't seem to be how the case had been going, he broke down and admitted it was a scam. We then went to the detention center, which was closed and dark. We were allowed in remotely to use a phone in the lobby. There is no "Scott Smith" on the their record of employees. The man already knew our son's name and address, and arrest records, which can be found online. He also got our first and last name, and cell phone number. He did not get credit card or any government issued numbers.
