My mother-in-law was contacted on Facebook Messenger by what appeared to be a friend of hers saying that she had received a $90,000 grant due to Covid and telling her how to get one too. She told her she needed to contact this person at ************. When she texted this number, she was told that she needed to send a $1,000 gift card in order to pay the filing fees for this grant. She told her when she had purchased the cards, to send her pictures of the cards along with the receipt, and then she would receive this grant money. After sending the $1,000 cards, she was told she would have to send another $1,500 in gift cards for additional fees. At this point, I found out what had transpired and stopped her from engaging with this woman anymore. The cards were Walmart giftcards that were used at a Sam's Club in Temple, Texas. She was ultimately scammed out of $1,000.
