I found a rental property online (apartments.com/pensacola) and filled out my contact info on the listing to set an appointment. Instead, I got an email from the owner (?) saying he and his wife had moved to New York to aid their daughter during her kidney transplant (later in the same email said "moved out of the states"). Please answer these bullet points as an application. I pointedly did not give my driver's license photo nor my SSN. The reply email said that I was approved. Two emails, now, and the owner still hadn't identified himself. I drove to the property to confirm its existence. Actually, that checked out; looking in through a window on the front door showed me it was, indeed, empty. Yard was fairly well kept up. I contacted the owner again with some comments and concerns. I offered that their asking of $1200 ($700 first month's rent & $500 deposit) was a lot of trust, especially seeing how they wouldn't mail out the rental agreement or keys until receipt of payment. I further offered that, if they're legit, I could mail payment post-dated to the day of move in and if I got the keys and paperwork in time then I would let the check go for deposit. I also asked if they have anyone in town with access to the property who could show me the inside. I asked for the owner's name and a brief personal history. Since I sent that email, the owner has dropped correspondence and the listing is no longer on the rental website. I am afraid that whomever is doing this will eventually find someone who does fork over $1200 or however much. Just don't want to see anyone get ripped off. I am willing to share the email thread if needed.
