Later I find out Jake charged the card on file for the brain mapping and an additional $114.53 charge without informing me or first submitting to insurance. The second charge turned out to be for an intake session with one of the therapists which was covered by my insurance 100% but he did not attempt to put it through insurance before charging my card. I told him I would like a refund because I wanted to try and go through insurance for both charges with letters of necessity from a specialist for the brain mapping. He agreed and provided the refund.
Jake stated insurance would cover my sessions. However he also provided us with incorrect and unexplained information such as “you will have a $35 copay each session.” My wife and I were required to take it upon ourselves to research with insurance what codes would be covered and which ones weren’t covered. Upon request, Jake provided a variety of billing codes he could bill treatment sessions through. There were two codes insurance said they did cover. Throughout this whole process I was very open with him, stating everything should be covered by insurance because my deductible had been met. It was also made clear I could only afford this if it was covered by insurance. It wasn’t until much later (literally months) that he indicated there would be additional fees. I again asked for clarification and he only just recently informed me I would have to pay $110 per session, which at around 33 sessions, I cannot afford. It took him months of repeated questions to explain something that should have been made clear before the mapping was ever done.
It was not right for me to have to pay for the brain mapping because it was a service rendered with inaccurate and incomplete information. He did not tell me the cost of future sessions at the time of the service, instead leading me to believe it would be covered by insurance, and therefore no payments would be owed as my deductible was met. What more, he is one of only a few providers that do biofeedback in CT. I cannot simply pay for and take the mapping to a different provider as the next nearest provider is located an hour away, and I do not drive due to medical reasons. I also still would not be able to afford the treatment sessions. If Jake was upfront with me initially, all of the frustration, anxiety and money spent, would have been avoided.
I wrote a letter stating all the facts on a timeline of when they happened and explaining why I did not want to pay in full. I even included a check for $100 with the memo line stating “brain mapping: payment in full,” as a show of compromise.
He responded by email saying he would not “discount” any further and would put the $100 toward the total payment and anything that had not been paid by December’s end would be sent to collections.
I scheduled a (free because of my insurance) consult with a lawyer, so I did not respond to the email, or take action. I was curious about his ability to send the case to collections when I wrote “payment in full” on the check. Before I could meet with the lawyer, I notice a third unauthorized charge for $26.28 to my account from CT Neuro. I contacted them over email again asking about the charge, and requesting a refund. They responded saying they sent the $350 brain mapping through insurance and (despite originally telling me insurance wouldn’t cover it), they did pay for part. The remaining balance owed is $126.28. Because I had already sent a check for $100, the final amount owed $26.28 was charged without any warning, explanation, or consent. I have repeated emails telling CT Neuro not to use the card on file without my consent, but they did, yet again. It is also very suspicious that my insurance covered part of a service that Jake originally told me wouldn’t be covered. Be it, I just have great insurance, or he is giving inaccurate and misleading information, is for someone else to decide. I will not be meeting with a lawyer, the final $26.28 is small enough that I paid it just to be done with the entire situation, and not waste anyone’s time.
Ultimately my issue with CT Neuro is Jake withholding information for months about hidden fees. I would never have agreed to complete the initial stages of treatment, costing me $350, if I knew there were future fees my insurance would not cover. I ended up only paying $126.28, but that is still money I never would have spent if Jake was honest about his fees. Furthermore, charging someone without notice after they have already asked you to take the card off file or charging someone for a service that would be covered by insurance is not acceptable. I wish to prevent this from happing to someone else as Jake has been unprofessional and a horribly poor communicator. Maybe he is doing everything just right enough that he is not breaking any rules or laws, but his business should be investigated because my entire interaction with CT Neuro Health has felt violating, unprofessional and scammy. A suggested resolution would be a refund for the $126.28, but I am not naive enough to think this will happen. It saddens me that someone whose job is supposedly to help those struggling with their mental health, caused an immense deal of pain and hardship to a client.
