Total money lost $1,900
Type of a scam Rental
I saw the advertisement of the apartment (located on 3000 Goldfinch Blvd Unit 2210, Princeton, NJ 08540) on Craigslist (https://cnj.craigslist.org/apa/d/princeton-beautiful- modern-apartment/7445010129.html) on February 10th. I sent an email to the landlord as the contact information is provided on Craigslist. On the next day, I received responses from the landlord. After seeing pictures of the apartment provided by the landlord (https:// myalbum.com/album/vfrMsbxSTV7Ktx/) and discussing detail with him, we decided to sign a long-term lease with his apartment. The landlord (Daniel Langdon) presented himself as a family man, working in the navy on a three year assignment in Spain. He provided his email address as the only means to contact him. We followed the instructions the landlord provided to finish the process within 24 hours as he requested. He sent us a reservation link from Airbnb and ask us to follow the guidance provided on the link to reserve the spot and sent him the security deposit which is two-month rent ($1,900). We transferred the money through the Wise App as the landlord asked on the reservation link and sent the money to the Airbnb agent (Magdalena Jeleva Petrova) in Spain on February 11th. After we completed the reservation application, we got email confirmation from the Airbnb and the landlord. He said that the Airbnb agent will be in touch on the move in day (Feb 20th). However, on February 20th, we did not hear anything from anyone. We sent emails to the landlord to check with the situation. Then, we got emails from Airbnb and the landlord that the agent got covid. The next available agent will be on February 23rd at 7pm. Since we still decided to move forward with the leasing process, we confirmed that we will meet the agent on February 23rd at 7pm and finish the move in process. The landlord said that once he got the agent’s information, he will send it to us. On February 23rd, I did not hear back from the landlord regarding the agent’s information throughout the day, despite several attempts to communicate with him. We still went to the apartment address over an hour drive in order to meet the agent, sign the lease and move in. When we got there, we did not see anyone at the appointment time. We tried to reach out to the landlord while we were there. We only have the landlord’s email that is the only way we can contact him. Unfortunately, we lost contact with the landlord as all the links he provided are now corrupted.
