Nearly Scammed at Arizona State University

David Broome, [email protected], attempted to get me to sign a document and pay money down before seeing a location. The apartment was too good to be true. His pictures were lifted off another website, and did not match the property photos on Zillow, Google, etc. His alias (Dave Broome is also an alias) Lucia Taylor originally contacted me on an ASU Rentals and Roommates Facebook page, had me give them my email address, then Dave Broome tried to complete the scam with multiple emails promising things other owners or property managers would not do. Beware of anything that looks like this.

I was trying to find a place near my office and that's when I put up a post saying that I need a place to stay and a lady contacted me saying that she knows some private landlords and gave me a location: 1118 Windsor Chase Ln, Spring, TX 77373, USA, the property was originally for 800$ and after some negotiation i got it for 600$. Then I checked on Zillow and the property was shown as a full house and I checked that with Dave and he told that the property has been renovated and therefore I am renting the 1 bedroom unit. So I thought of taking the apartment since he was willing to share a copy of his ID prior to making my security deposit. So I did the payment and that was needed so that I could see the apartment virtually but then he said that I needed to send the first month's rent as well for my reservation. I called him on the number that he gave me: +14042820109. He did not pick it up the first few times then he called me back and I swear his voice did not match his face on his ID and that's when I figured I had been scammed! I asked him to refund my amount. And he said that as the lawyer is involved and there's a contract it will take 3-4 days to refund the amount. I don't know if I will get my 600$ back but just thought of letting you guys know not to fall in the scam, he gave me two email ids for zelle: [email protected] and [email protected]. His name on his ID was Dave Alan Broome. And the lady that referred him her name was : Jannie Evans Annelie

Context: I've been trying to move out of my current apartment so I decided to check the University of Minnesota housing & roommates page, and I posted that I'm looking for a private studio apartment that has month-to-month leasing available near campus. A woman responded and claimed that she knew some landlords near the campus area so she referred me to this guy who sent me some information for a place near my current apartment. The phone number the guy gave me is 4044588943 and the email account of the guy is [email protected] and the address he gave was 319 12th Ave SE, Minneapolis, MN.

He then told me to put down a $850 deposit and the $850 first month rent in order for me to be able to see the apartment, so I did pay him through Zelle and he told me to pay this account: [email protected]

Then something strange happened: he said that I have to pay $250 which was clearly not stated in the leasing contract (attached), I tried to negotiate with him and then he gave me a $100 discount.

Then, he said that according to some Minnesota law, I have to pay last month's rent of $1000 to [email protected] and that I have to pay $400 of "lawyer service fees" to this account on Zelle: [email protected]

Keep in mind I was still not able to visit the apartment even though I made those payments, and that was extremely foolish of me to do so. That was when I believed that I have fallen for a rental scam and all of this was done through online banking via Zelle.

I was wondering what I can do since I've already filed a complaint to my bank and I was wondering what the police department can do.
