Dell Technical Support Reports & Reviews (2)

- Ortonville, MI, USA

Scammer called and identified himself as Marvin from Dell Technical Support. He informed me that Dell was monitoring my computer because of suspicious error statements that were coming across their server from my computer. This sounded somewhat legitimate because I was having computer problems and had two virus notices from my McAfee anti-virus software in the past week. I have used Dell Tech support in the past, so the caller sounded legitimate. He asked me for approval to run my computer from his remote site. He ran a series of troubleshooting diagnostics and said that my SSL had been hacked and would need to be replaced. He stated that the SSL was a high security item that could only be replaced by one company and that company would not accept a credit card that had been exposed to the hackers. He stated that I needed to pay $200 immediately so that a new SSL could be downloaded to my computer and I needed to hustle to a store that sold gift cards that would be used to pay the $200. I got the gift cards and he ran them through his system and reported that one had a bad number and that because of this both were unacceptable and they would be crediting my credit car for $200 and I needed to purchase two additional cards. I refused and hung up. Bottom line: out two hundred bucks and looking back, I was stupid. Not sure what, if anything was taken from my computer.
