Type of a scam Government Grant
When I answered the unknown number’s call, it was a foreign man talking with very difficult to understand English. He mumbled and slurred certain words, I believe, and I also believe that he did this on purpose to try to confuse me. He told me that he was calling from the Department of Treasury and that I had been given an opportunity to receive a grant for $9,000. He told me that I’d been selected along with 1,500 others. He said that I was receiving this grant because I hadn’t had any problems with credit, with crime, or with the government in general. He told me some of my information (information I had NOT given to him prior to this conversation) and asked me to verify certain information, including my first and last name, my age (him asking my age came a while after providing this other information to me, which was strange in my opinion), my address, my town, my zip code, and my phone number that he’d called. He asked me how I would like to receive the grant, whether I would like some kind of gift card I think (I remember hearing Wal-Mart, CVS, and Walgreens, although I could be wrong), a credit card, or through direct deposit with a checking or savings account. He gave me a specific ‘grant confirmation number (NA691, specifically)’ to give to another number that I had to call (I think he called it an accountant number, but his English was very difficult to understand, so perhaps not) which was 855-998-2677. He said the call would take roughly 15-20 minutes. He asked how I would be spending the money, to which I replied buying a car and renting an apartment. He told me that the money could not be used for illegal purposes, like gambling or at the casino (random, and why not, was what I thought to myself), and I feel like I heard him say marijuana afterward, but I don’t know for sure. That one would be REALLY random. He kept telling me to call this other 855-998-2677 number multiple times, saying that they closed at 7 p.m. It was not 7 p.m. where I was at the time. It was 7:24 p.m. when I took the call, and he didn’t specify what time it was from where he was calling or how long it would be until it was 7 p.m. when they closed. (Does the Department of Treasury even close?) I told him I would call the other number and hung up. I hadn’t called the other number yet, and ten minutes after I’d hung up from the conversation with the unknown number, I was called after that by an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT NUMBER from a different state, the phone number being 240-841-2997 from Laurel, Maryland instead of Washington D.C. or instead of an unknown number. This person (possibly the same person, possibly not) told me to call them before they closed at 7 p.m. multiple times, and I replied that I would as soon as I could, and before I barely even got the words out of my mouth, he hung up without another word.
Very strange. This all felt rather suspicious, in my opinion, considering I’ve never applied for a grant, nor do I have a business, nor have I applied for college or any college loans or grants.
Hopefully this information helps others!
