No address given, website and QR code result in site not found error, filing deadline seems wrong and arbitrary, does not match deadline established by govt for beneficial ownership reporting, letter has spacing/formatting error, there seems to be no “United Business Refulation” nor any “Department of Records Management Business Filing Division”, does not use terms from the upcoming regulation change such as beneficial ownership nor does it reference the actual legislation.

I received a letter titled "Subject: Notice of federal filing requirement" from the US Dept. of Records Management relating to my small business. The letter "requires response" with the penalty being a $500 fine per day, criminal fines of up to $10k, and the possibility of imprisonment four a maximum of two years. I'm young, unfortunately young enough to look at face value and assume that the entity exists and I should follow the rules and fulfill my role as a business owner. I scanner the QR code and typed in the web link within the letter but luckily neither my phone nor laptop would navigate me to the site. I was able to find web forums & blogs referencing the letter and found that it's a scam, I've pasted links to those resources below, all of which were posted in 2023.

Just received this notice in the mail. Looks really legit but website doesn't work and there are some mistakes in the notice itself making it look somewhat flawed. They wanted me to go online, claiming I need to complete a "mandatory report" on my business.

Received a letter in the mail addressed to my business name informing me of a filing requirement in accordance with recent legislation enacted to combat financial crimes. Noncompliance with this mandatory reporting may incur severe penalties up to $500 per day, criminal fines of up to $10,000 and/or imprisonment.

I went to the website listed on the letter www.deptofbusiness.us to check it out and the website did not exist. Next went to search if this was a scam and sure enough!!

Mail came requesting my business information. So, I scanned the QR code, it took me to a website, and I started entering information. It seemed odd so I stopped but I did enter my business Tax ID and business mailing address and member names. When trying to go to the website my blocker alerted me that this was a scam.

I recieved a letter in the mail from United States Business Regulation. The letter stated I needed to update my records. I put in all of my information including social, drivers licenses details ( even a copy of my DL ) The online forum seems very legit. Once I got to the payment section I decided to do a little research. I then found a scam alert on the BBB.

Got a letter that looks legit basically giving me up to the 17 January to file a mandatory ownership reporting and threatening non compliance will result in up to $500 a day or imprisonment. Asking for a social and a photo id. Something just didn’t seem right!!! My wife received a letter from US Department of record Management obligating us to provide basically all our tax id's , social security numbers, business owners etc.

The I.R.S. already has this info and anything that comes from the Federal government emails or letters has to be .gov not .us no teeth in this form. Scam.
