They called me to ask for me to purchase a $250 Amazon card and call back and give tbem tbe number on the back of card and prepay directv bill for 4 months then I wouldn't receive a bill for 4 months. After that pay $62 a month for the remainder two years.

I was contacted by someone representing themselves as being from DirecTV. The caller ID even said DirecTV on my phone, so these people have a way of spoofing DirecTV’s actual Customer Service number. At first a woman with a thick accent explained that AT&T & DirecTV were offering a special promotion whereby they would reduce my monthly bill to $69.95 per month. She also said that Amazon was involved and was sponsoring this promotion. If I was interested, she would transfer me to a “Supervisor” who would answer any questions and explain how it would work. I expressed interest and was transferred. The man I spoke to was a little easier to understand and said that for this to work, I would pay the first 5 months of $350, during which DirecTV would not bill me and then for the next 19 months I would be billed @ 69.95 per month. He specifically mentioned that it was for two years but would not be a contract commitment . Then he said that since this was sponsored by Amazon that I should pay the first 5 months using an Amazon gift card which I was to purchase at a local store and not directly from Amazon. And if I hurried and called them back by 10:00 pm tonight with the Gift card information, they would send me a $100 VISA gift card or an Amazon Fire Tablet. He gave me the following number to call (888-660-7949) and a Promotion Code number. I figured that this was a scam by going to the Amazon website and reading about the exact scam on the page devoted to Scams using Amazon gift cards. That page is here: Amazon.com/giftcardalerts. If you call the 888 number above it sounds just like when you call DirecTV. Lesson here is NEVER PAY UP FRONT FOR ANYTHING LIKE THIS, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT INVOLVES PAYING WITH A GIFT CARD.

The following description from your site describes this scenario exactly as it happened but I will provide more detailed information: "DIRECTV impersonators have been contacting customers offering a reduced monthly rate on bills in addition to receiving premium channels if they paid 5 months up front using Amazon gift cards within 24 hours of the call. If the consumer agrees, a “supervisor” will be put on the line to record and verify the agreement and provide an authorization number to use when calling back in to give the claim code located on the back of the Amazon card." The only exception to that statement is the "supervisor" did not give me 24 hours. I received two calls today. I ignored the first one but answered the second one at 3:09 PM. The first person I talked to - I don't remember the name he gave me - described the "Amazon Promotion" which is that my Directv service monthly cost would be reduced to only $59.95/mo for a period of 2 years with no commitment from me and I would also get all the premium channels for the 2 years. At this point I figured if it sounds too good to be true..., so I was suspicious and asked if they could email me the information. They of course said they could not do that. I decided to go along but I would not provide any credit card or personal information. So then he connected me to the "supervisor" - said his name was Oscar - who first asked for my phone number and then read my address to me to supposedly confirm my customer identity. Then he told me I needed to purchase an Amazon Prepaid Gift card for $300 to cover the first 5 months of Directv service and call their billing dept at 888-910-3813 ext 1 by 9 PM to give them the number from the gift card for $300 and this "Amazon Discount Promo Code", DTV2607. They said the $300 card would cover the first 5 months and then after that I would be billed only $59.95/mo for the remainder of the 2 years. I said OK and we disconnected. At this point I was fairly certain this was a scam. So I did a little research on the web and see that it is. Thank you BBB for the information you provided. Also I would like to mention the caller ID came in as “800-531-5000 Directv”. I checked and this number is a legitimate Directv contact number. But I realize caller IDs can be faked.

Caller inquired if we had Directv services, they had new Satillite services available. Had me check my system with questions about what I was receiving now. Then proceded to advise me on upgrading my receiver, and to talk to a representative, he had no name but technical support from Directv. I couldn't understand half of what he telling me. Eventually, understanding he wanted me to pay him a deposit of $1500.00. When I questioned that, he said I would get it back in November in our Account. I made him repeat this again and told him not now. I called Directv myself and was told no such activity is in effect and that they would never call on such an upgrade but use the mail system.

I received a phone call by (supposedly) the DirecTV sales office and was told that I could receive a lowered monthly charge for my DirecTV account TV package down to $24.99 a month for 24 months. They knew my account number and my name and address. They said I would have to purchase a Pre-Paid EBay gift card that I could by at any retailer such as Walgreen's, CVS, HEB, etc. They said that 10 months of premiums must first be prepaid in the amount of $250.00 in order to receive this special. They even gave me a promotional code and their billing departments phone number of (888) 910-3747 ext. 1 and call them back to pay for this special with the purchased gift card. My wife and I called DirecTV directly and they said there was no such offered promotion and advised us to ALWAYS call DirecTV first before accepting solicited promotions.

Recieved a phone call from Directv saying if i paid them a $300 amazon giftcard I would only owe 14 more monthly bills of 29.99. They knew my name and address, but not my exact bill amount. If I paid them by 10 PM tonight, I would get a $100 prepaid visa. When I looked up scams, I found out that only amazon accepts amazon gift cards for payment, otherwise it's a scam! Please stay away!

DirecTV representative called me with a promotion that they had going on last month April 11th. They asked me to send $1,250 for my direcTV and my AT&T service and I went have to make a payment for 6 months and now my services got disconnected after making that payment. When I called them to ask why my services got disconnected that's when I was informed that they had some representatives scamming the customers. Now I'm stuck with 2 big bills and my services are out.. their number is 18556835477

I got a call that showed on my caller ID that the call was from the Directv work number. They offered me a $50/month discount & free HBO, Showtime, Starz, and NFL for 2 years with NO penalty for early cancellation (this alone was very suspicious). I just had to prepay 4 months (red flag) by purchasing an E-bay gift card (this is a GIANT red flag!). Another red flag was that they wouldn't give me the exact amount for the gift card to the penny. They said a $300 card would cover the 4 months. This offer was "too good to be true." I called Directv and they had no record of such an offer. The best they could offer was $7.00 / month discount!

Received a telephone call on Tuesday, 9 Apr, from a man named Michael Alex claiming to work for DirecTV. He said there were satellite problems the night before that required them to update their programming, and not all receiver boxes would be able to receive the signal. He asked me to give him the ID number on my receiver box, which I did. He claimed my receiver was affected and asked me to turn the TV off for 10 minutes so an on-line update could be made. He then told me there was no charge for the updated programming, but there was a fee of $199 which would be a security deposit against the equipment I already have and which would be refundable in 6 months. I asked him to repeat himself, and then I told him I had a 2-yr contract with DirecTV and I had no intention of paying additional funds. I asked to speak to a supervisor. That person identified himself as Mike Melvin, and he repeated the same information. I told him I refused to pay a security deposit for equipment I already have. He told me my TV would quit receiving a signal in 2 days. I then asked if I could use this as grounds to terminate the existing contract, and he said not without paying an early termination fee. I told him I would call the BBB the next day before I decided what to do, as I was fairly certain they could not add a fee to an existing contract. After Mike Melvin continued to repeat the same information, I terminated the call. It did not get to the point that I was asked for any payment information because I told them upfront I was refusing to pay any additional fees.

I received a call from 1-800-531-5000. The caller ID name was listed as unavailable. But I do know that this phone is the number for

DirecTV.

The caller offered to reduce my Directv bill to $62.50 per month for 24 months, if I prepay four months ahead. This offered is paired with Amazon to promote Amazon gift cards. I had to purchase gift card for $250.00 and call them back at 844-464-0752 to prepay.

I purchased the gift card,

but before calling that number, I had called DirecTV who told me this was a scam.

How can a company use someone else's phone # to show up on my caller ID?

This is the second call. I received this same call a few months back, but didn't follow through.

DirecTV says they are aware, but what action can they take to prevent this scam?

- Ponte Vedra, FL, USA

Scammer offered fake DIRECTV/Amazon deal. $250 paid via Amazon prepaid card to "reduce" DirecTV cost to $62.50 per month for 2 years. I googled and found several indications this was a scam

We recently added Direct Tv. The caller said that DirecTV and Ebay were offering a promotion: If I purchased a $300 gift card from Ebay and used it to prepay my DirecTV account for five months will receive free premium channels and discounted monthly rates for 2 years. You would go get the ebay card and call them with the number they give you and a code, then pass along the information on the ebay card, therefore prepaying them.

Received a call from the Directv phone number 1-800-531-5000 about a promotion with Amazon and they told me that I could lower my

monthly bill to 39.99 with access to all channels. I had to pay 7 months in advance for a total of 280.00 and I had to pay the amount with

a prepaid amazon credit card. I received a promotional code number (DTV 2607) and a phone number of 888-576-2037 ext. 1 to call back and provide the information on the prepaid Amazon card. I was not too confident that this was a legitimate offer and I google Amazon and Directv and found out that this scam as been going on for years.

A man representing himself as Daniel (employee #3601) called me on Monday 2/19/2018 at 9:40 am and said he was from DIRECTV. He was calling to offer me a promotion for new customers (I have had DIRECTV for about a month). If I was willing to pay 4 months that day by 8pm, I would be able to reduce my bill from $100 a month to $74.99 a month. He said the only way DIRECTV could offer such a deal because the promotion was being sponsored by Amazon. To get the word out about Amazon gift cards I would need to pay the 4 months upfront using an Amazon gift card. Daniel told me I needed to purchase an Amazon gift card for $299.96. I was told to call DIRECTV billing department at 888-588-8012 by 8 pm and to give the representative the promotion code DTV-196-B26 and my gift card information to make the payment. Daniel called me back at 5 pm in the evening to find out if I had purchased my Amazon gift card and if I was ready to make the payment. I informed Daniel that I called the real directtv and knew this was a scam. Daniel asked what number I called because it definitely wasn't a scam, at that point I hung up.

- Arlington, TX, USA

Direct tv called me offering me a discount. They said put 250.00 on an amazon gift card and give them the number. I was supposed to get a credit on my account and a 100.00 Visa card.

DIRECTV impersonators called me twice offering a reduced monthly rate on bills in addition to receiving premium channels if I paid 6 months up front using Amazon gift cards within 24 hours of the call. When I agreed, a “supervisor” was put on the line to record and verify the agreement and provide an authorization number to use when calling back in to give the claim code located on the back of the Amazon card.

I received a text msg from "Directv" asking me if I know that I can get up to 50%discounts on my bills by calling the 855-771-7376 from 10-5 pm (PST). I call and the representative says his name is Brian Davis at ext#703. Once I agreed to the promo, he said I qualify for a complementary gift of an ipad or $100 VISA gift card. So the offer is that I prepay 6 mos of $60 per month and then after 6 mos, I would get my bills for $60 for the remaining 18 months. He proceeds to tell me that in order to take advantage of this offer, I have to purchase a green.moneypak card and load it with the first 6 months of payment. He says that once I purchase the card, to call the billing dept at 855-902-5424. Then he says he is gonna call me back when the changes have occurred on my acct. So I call Directv and speak to 3 different reps. The last 2 were the ones that told me that it was fraud and that directv doesn't have any of those promos. I have since blocked the number.

- Altamonte Springs, FL, USA

A representative from Directv called offering a promotional rate for services if I bundled my AT&T phone with my Directv service. They called from Directv’s main number so it seemed legitimate until they told me I needed to call a number back, tel:888-301-9087, and pay my bill 3 months in advance with an Amazon gift card. I called and they had my service address, phone and bill amount. I didn’t pay anything. The requested amount was $405.

- Green Valley, AZ, USA

Call showed as DIRECTV, caller new the name on the account and offered free HBO for the Holiday Season, not a contract. Called Directv and they have no current offer for free HBO. Complaint filled with Directv, and now the BBB. Caller asked for no credit card information or any request for money.

- York, SC, USA

Just received a call from the actual directv customer service number. The foreigner on the other end said that directv was running a special promotion with amazon. He said I qualified for the special low rate of $69.99 per month for the top programming service for the next 2 years, all I had to due was pay the first 5 months up front which would be $350. To do this I had to go to a local store and buy a $350 amazon card to use to pay the bill. While on the call I googled this info and immediately was told this is a scam. I then told the caller this and he said it wasn't. He then proceeded to tell me my full name and full address! I hung up and called directv and verified that this is a scam. Directv told me that they do not call out on the 1-800 customer service line, this line is only used for calling into directv.
