The scammer said that he is a U.S. Marine. He made an offer for a book that I sold on eBay. He said that he bought the book for his cousin as a gift and asked me to help him to buy an eBay gift card, which he could not get himself since he was on the ship at the moment, to include in the package. He offered to pay me for the book and gift card through Paypal. As a courtesy for the Marine, I helped him to buy the gift card. However, he asked me to email and picture and the redemption code of the gift card to Paypal for verification. However, the email that claimed to be Palpal customer service didn't look authentic.
