I receieved a phone call from a person claiming to be a cook county clerk who was going to serve my wife papers. They said they would connect me to a “mediator” who would resolve the issue before the papers were served (if I didn’t want to go to court). I called the mediator, seemed very legit - he even would wait on hold while I would try to verify his info. He provided very specific information about my wife, down to dates she opened bank accounts, precious addresses, etc. He said he was working on behalf’s of Wells Fargo, and that I could settle the debt now vs going to court, as Wells Fargo has enough evidence to prove it was her who opened the account and that her overdraft balance had hit over $1000. I eventually considered it might be real, because he would wait on hold while I kept trying to verify the info. He said they would take down my card info but not charge it until I reviewed all the relevant information. I gave him my card info, but as soon as he sent over the emailed PDF With a Wells Fargo “account number” I called up Wells Fargo and they said there never was such an account. I called up my bank, froze the credit card, froze all my credit along with my wife’s. I made a mistake, and thankfully I got lucky and figured it out before it got worse, but please beware these people - it was the most legit scam I have encountered yet. I also filed a police report and I recommend anyone do the same who experiences interactions with these people.
