I live in Washington State and sought to renew my driver's license. On 2-14-2021, I found the drivinglicenserenewalonline.com website when searching via Google for renewals and it was at the top of the list. I'm pretty sure it had no "Ad" designation by Google. The webpage displayed a Washington State Flag, which I mistakenly thought it meant drivinglicenserenewalonline.com was how the State was renewing driver's licenses online.
They had disclaimers that they were not affiliated with the State but the disclaimers were at the bottom of the webpage. Regardless, since I went into it thinking the website was how the State did business, I read only the top of the pages.
(As of now (2-18-2021, 12:50pm), the website is disabled in that it fails to move to their Washington (or any other state's) page where they displayed the Flag. Further, their website is not showing up in Google searches using the same search input as I had done on 2/14/2021, "wa state driver's license renewal".)
I proceeded through their webpages and paid $105 once for my renewal and then $105 again for my wife's renewal. The $105 is $54 for the State and $51 for them. At that time, I assumed the cost was normal for the State and paid it. (I had incorrectly thought the State had found a way to hike the price for extra revenue.)
On 2/15/2021, I research the renewal cost versus the total cost and it was at this point I realized I had given a private, 3rd party company my information.
In addition, I saw that my credit card company (Citibank) lists the transactions' Merchant Country as Nigeria.
I sent an email to the website (using their specified email of [email protected]) demanding a refund. They have replied twice defending their website. Their 2nd email of late 2/17/2021 also said the they "have been refunded" me but I have yet to see their credit on my credit card's transactions.
Their privacy policy page is at https://wadrivinglicenserenewalonline.com/policy...
- They sell your information to about 100 marketing companies.
- They have an opt-out policy but it's laborious to use and it fails to notify many of the marketing companies.
- My opt-out effort for 2 of the companies failed to opt-out on about a dozen marketing companies.
- 1 of the 3 opt-out websites (youronlinechoices.com) completely fails to work because their list of countries that they operate in fails to include the US.
- Cites only California laws about privacy, not Washington State.
