...and I clicked the customer service number towards the top.
The phone call that followed should have all been a red flag to me, but in my desperation to help my Very Panicked Husband, I rushed through it without thinking twice.
Red flag #1 was there was no identifying welcome message from the company; it went straight to a generic “Thank you for calling, someone will be with you in a moment” greeting, and a man with a thick Indian accent answered shortly thereafter. “Hello can I help you?” he asked.
Red flag #2 is the man didn’t say what company he was with. It was I who had to ask, “Is this Drobo support?” and all he said was, “Yes this is the correct number.” He never said the company name the whole time.
Red flags #3 and #4 were that he asked for my first and last name, and then, “for verification purposes,” he asked for my birthdate. I asked him in disbelief why he needed my birthdate, and he reassured me it was protocol, and stupidly I gave it to him. It wasn’t until he asked for my address that all the red flags finally flapped loudly in my brain and I realized this was some sort of information phishing set-up. I immediately hung up.
So I have no idea what they can do with my name and DOB (and they also have my phone number so I’m probably easy enough to track now), but I’m posting this in hopes it will help someone avoid making the same mistake. It’d be awesome if these guys can get shut down!
