Type of a scam Online Purchase
The website will use a fake package with a real tracking number around your area. Once the fake package arrives they will use that tracking number to bypass or counter your claim for a refund because the tracking will say that the item was delivered to your city and zip code. The tracking number won't even show the name and address of the delivery just the city and zip. So then, the customer has no way of finding out where the package was delivered to because shipping companies will not provide that information due to security/privacy issues. In the end, depending on what services you used to pay, you might not get a refund and most will side with the scammer relying on that tracking number as the delivery confirmation.
According to the Wisconsin Better Business Bureau (BBB), this is how the scam works:
You are shopping online and find a site with amazing deals, often 50% cheaper than prices on established websites. The website and the products look legitimate, so you decide to take a chance and make a purchase. After checkout, you get a confirmation email that contains a tracking number from UPS, FedEx, or another shipping service.
What happens next depends on the scam. In some versions, the tracking number provided is completely fake. In other variations, the number is real and appears to work at first... until "your" item is delivered somewhere else. Either way, the outcome is the same. Providing a phony tracking number allows scammers to stall and shift blame for the missing package to the shipping service. In reality, your purchase never existed in the first place.
