Duke Energy / imposter Reports & Reviews (1)

- Seattle, WA, USA

I received a call from (919) 527-6873, which is a Raleigh, NC phone number. I heard an automated message saying that it was Duke Energy, and my services will be shut off because I did not pay the bill. The phone call then transferred to the electrician, where I explained my situation. The electrician said he did not have any information, but he can help transfer me to the billing department. The billing department then looked up my name and address, and I explained that I have moved away and thus I have no money to pay, as I no longer live there. The billing guy found that it was a mistake in their billing system, and said that they actually need to credit me some money because I had already discontinued services with them. Even up to this point, I had believe it was all legitimate – having different departments really made it seem like they were really my utilities company, and the guy went along with me saying I already discontinued services. Then he said they have their new refund system setup on Zelle – they told me to put in the account number 9415599038 with authorization code 44444. This, of course, was them trying to get me to send $444.44 to the phone number (941) 559-9038. The person's name was enrolled as "Ray Leyva". I immediately realized what was going on and I hung up.
