Type of a scam Moving
The townhouse that i have lived in for over 15 years was sold to a new owner. The new owner raised the rent significantly. I decided after much internal debate that i should move in order to save money. I know no one who can help me move. I placed ads on social media sites such as nextdoor and facebook, requesting help with moving. I am on a fixed income. I was quoted $1900 by one gentleman. I asked a friend through, Facebook messenger, if she knew anyone who could help me move. She recommended Dutchess Kelli. I didn't ask a whole lot of questions(Big Mistake). I was happy and relieved when Dutchess called me. Dutchess was calm, and exuded an air of professionalism that inspired trust. Dutchess said confidently over the phone(apartment yet unseen) that she would have me moved in a weekend. I told her that she needed to see my apartment before making any commitment. She said that she would come the following Friday and that she would require a $50 retainer fee, in cash, on the Friday that she was to visit if we both agreed that she would take the job. On Friday 7/14/23, Dutchess came and looked at my apartment. I showed her the whole apartment. I have alot of stuff. Duchess agreed to take the job. I was desperately relieved. Dutchess quoted me a price of $1100, with a $100 deposit. I was so happy to have someone help me to move. I gave Dutchess $500 upfront. I also asked her to sign a reciept. Dutchess also saw items that i had in my apartment that she liked, one item was an antique silver tea set. She offered to take $100 off of the $600 that i still owed her. I also had 5 collectable coins roughly worth around $100 each. Dutchess said that she would take the coins and get them appraised by someone that she knew. I, unfortunately, trusted Dutchess and i allowed her to take the coins. The very first day of work, i did most of the work because Dutchess wanted an air conditioner put in the window, and she had been up all night, hurrying to get a different job done. Also Dutchess acted as if she were in pain. So, I let Dutchess sit and rest while i did most of the work. Dutchess also wanted me to throw everything in the garbage. This was Dutchess's idea of moving someone. Dutchess also began saying, "I don't believe how much stuff you have." "There is no way we are going to be able to move all this stuff. I began having misgivings about Dutchess, and about moving all together. I decided after seeing the available apartments and seeing their listed rental price, and hearing Dutchess's voice in the back of my head, not to move afterall. The next day I told Dutchess that I was not going to move. I asked Dutchess to give me back, my $500, plus the 5 collectable coins, and the antique silver tea set. Dutchess said that she wasn't giving me back my $500. I broke the contract because i did not move, therefore she was not going to give me back my $500. She said that the coins were locked in her safe at home. This is where the antique silver tea set was as well. Dutchess said she would drive home and get the coins and the tea set. (Dutchess had made a comment that she owned and lived in an RV, at an TV park. Dutchess left my home around 9am. I sat on the porch for atleast 3 hours waiting for Dutchess to return. Dutchess never returned. I texted her around 5pm asking her where she was and where my stuff was!?. Dutchess asked me, by text, later that night, or the next day how often do i go out on my porch? Later that afternoon Dutchess texted me and said she had put the tea set and 5 coins on my porch. She said that she put them on my porch and that was the end of it. She is not responsible for someone stealing this stuff off my porch. I called my friend to ask about Dutchess and if she knew her real name. My friend said, "no," but she is always helping the elderly and disabled in the senior apartments where i live. I made out a police report. The officer looked up Dutchess Kelli and there was no such person.
For this incident i lost a whopping $1100 dollars. I feel sick inside knowing i was fleeced and their was little that i could do to recoup my money.
