While job scouting during a period of unemployment, I was approached via email by someone claiming to be from a company named Evotec. The email included a W-4 form to fill for hire along with a letter of a job description and a company word mark. When I asked for the company’s EIN number, the representative refused to disclose the information. I refused to submit the tax sheet, to which the rep claimed was no problem and we could proceed with the job regardless. Upon agreeing to continue with this plan, the person sent a check that was processed through my bank. They asked to have the money placed in specific gift cards. The funds were supposedly a deposit in advance for equipment that I’d be receiving for the remote job shortly upon delivery. The check cleared and I followed instructions due to there being no deposit error after submitting the funds via mobile deposit. Later, after a few days and money withdrawn, I found out the check bounced.

With further investigating, I found an EIN number for a company named Evotec located in Germany. I still have no job and now I’m glad I didn’t send them my personal information.

The representative using screen name Christian Wojczewki on teams kept reassuring me the bank and financial problems were no issue but after the fraudulent check failed to clear after funds were indeed withdrawn, his credibility has been tarnished. I’ve obviously received no equipment for this remote job and the representative insists on having me cash another check in the same amount for a large technology purchase with a value of a little over $5000 USD. I’m still worried about the bank issue as I was told the check was indeed real, but funds were probably cancelled after processing. Unemployment stands and I’ve considered filing a claim with the Sacramento office as well.
