I came upon an ad for a security guard in lower Manhattan. I thought that location would be great considering the problems with train service, it’ll be easier to get to from Brooklyn.
I contacted them by email. This was a Friday night I believe. Saturday evening I get a call from a man calling himself Director Joseph. He said they’re looking to hire soon, I could go in on Monday for an interview, asked what shifts i would be interested in working, my availability and so on.
Director Joseph said there will be an online test with the department of homeland security that’ll cost $160. He asked if I’d have any trouble paying that. I said no. He asked if I could take the test to get certified by Tuesday. I said yes.
Monday, not wanting to risk being late, I take a cab to the interview site. When it’s time for the interview, one of two men in the room, depending on who was free, takes all you’d information. I handed in my resume, my drivers license, and my security guard license.
They asked if I’d be interested in armed guard and tried to sell it to me, and we’re asking how much the other place I got my license from had charged for their services, like he was trying to sell me on their prices.
When I filled out the paperwork, they asked how I’d pay the $160. I said with card. They said they don’t accept card. I said isn’t is online? They said it’s an I person classroom. They said you can take money out the atm. I was very hesitant, but I thought it would help in getting a job. I went to take out the money toward the class. I pay the $160 NON REFUNDABLE amount and signed the paper for the class while talking to you to distract from reading the paper or processing what’s happening. After signing they tell you this is your balance, when will you be back to pay it? And I asked why is there a balance? The test is $160. The man, whose name was Andre, said $160 just holds your spot in the class. I said I could go back on Wednesday, but I kept asking questions I wasn’t getting answers to. I left, I called director Joseph and told him I didn’t feel comfortable paying all that money up front if I don’t know whether or not there is a real class or if this is legitimate.
I went back to the location about half hour after leaving, and spoke to the two men in the interview room and told them I can’t pay the remainder until I know the class is real. They said it doesn’t work like that. I said director Joseph just told me I could do it that way- pay after verification.
They both refused and finally the other man agreed to let me do that. They said I hurt their feelings by saying I thought it was a scam.
I was unable to attend the class following, and did not want to go back.
Afterward, I had gotten a phone call from someone following up, telling me I had a balance. I had to work that weekend as bd said I’d reschedule. Some time passes and I receive a text message saying that if I don’t pay the balance, they will send it to collections and ruin my credit.
I found that to be Harassment and threatening.

On 6/2/2020 arrived at above location (name of company was not listed) for interview. Signed in on log in sheet, called into office immediately. Was very briefly interviewed by Mr. Mara (347-480-0529), asked a few question and gave me the job description (warehouse worker), without revealing the job site location. When asked to verify job location, I was only told it is in Manhattan, NY, he refused to give me an exact address. Was then told, “You seem like a nice guy. I’m bringing you on.” After that statement I was told I must pay an additional $289.00 (cash or money order only) for additional OSHA Training. I proceeded to give the first deposit of $150.00 cash to Mr. Mara. I was then told to return to above location on Friday 6/5/2020 @ 10:00 am with additional $289.00. I signed what I believed at that time was a legitimate contract (copy enclosed with payment receipt). Was told after training completed on Friday that I would be sent out to work. Left interview after that.
Once I arrived home and discussed with family members, found out that many people have been scammed by this said company. When I Googled the company, it redirected me to a company based in Irvine, California. I have decided not to go to training and lose an additional $289.00.
At this time, I would like to see this company held accountable for continuously scamming people and I would like a refund of my original $150.00.
