A woman named Gailynn called my workplace, a printing company, and asked to speak to the shipping department on December 1st. As the receptionist I could tell this was either sales or a sales follow up of some sort, so I asked her what it was regarding (we don't have a "shipping department"). She told me that we have been ordering 2" clear packing tape from their company Dynatek (which I later confirmed was a lie) and as a customer reward they are sending us a $5 Starbucks giftcard. She read off our company address and said it is going in the mail today, and asked if she could address it to me so it isn't thrown away. She already had my name at this point. I did not give her any more information and we hung up. Then on December 7 I received a large box of 2" clear packing tape from Dynatek, with an invoice for almost $500. When I called the company they claimed that on their scam call on December 1st, I had actually requested verbally to order "another" case of "our" tape they continued to claim we had ordered before- we have ordered only from Uline for 20+ years. I kept firm that I did no such thing, and told her to check the recording of the call. After a brief verbal argument the manager Patty told me they would fax me a label to return the case of tape, and that she would "look into what could have happened to cause the error." This scam has been documented before online- all they want is a name of someone in the company and they will give various lies to obtain that information. Then they claim that this person ordered the product, usually this tape, since it is a common office item, and you have to catch this "error" within a couple days of them sending it or they claim it is too late and you owe 20% (I got this information off their invoice). I have attached a picture of the invoice. Most people know not to give information to sales callers and scammers like this, but I never thought of my own name as information to keep secure. I want to make other people of this scam- it can really be damaging to your business' credit OR your own professional reputation, especially if not caught in time.
